Deputy Director of English

Lordswood Boys' School
Birmingham

About the role

We are seeking to appoint an ambitious and highly capable Deputy Director of English who can help lead one of the most important subject areas in the school, supporting the Director of English in securing excellent teaching, strong outcomes and a culture of high ambition across the department.

English matters enormously at Lordswood Boys' School because literacy builds success. This role offers the chance to help shape curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and intervention in a department that has a profound influence on pupils' confidence, achievement and life chances.

The successful candidate will combine excellent classroom practice with the organisational strength and relational credibility needed to support subject leadership. They will play a key role in maintaining momentum, developing colleagues, responding to priorities and ensuring that pupils experience consistently strong English teaching.

This is an ideal role for an existing English teacher who is ready to step more formally into leadership, or for a current middle leader seeking a broader and more strategic role within a flourishing and ambitious school community.

What we are looking for

  • A strong English specialist with the knowledge, credibility and ambition to support subject leadership across Key Stages 3 and 4.

  • Someone able to teach English very well while also contributing meaningfully to curriculum, assessment, intervention and team development.

  • A colleague who understands the central role of literacy in improving achievement, confidence and access for all pupils.

  • A professional who can work closely with the Director of English to secure consistency, support colleagues and maintain high expectations.

  • Someone who is organised, dependable and ready to influence beyond their own classroom through thoughtful, disciplined leadership.

  • A teacher who can build positive relationships with pupils, families and colleagues while helping to drive standards forward.

Why join Lordswood Boys' School and Central Academies Trust?

  • A culture of high expectation, strong pastoral care and genuine teamwork.

  • Professional development, coaching and career progression within Lordswood Boys' School and Central Academies Trust.

  • The chance to shape English provision in a school that is confident, improving and ambitious for further growth.

  • Trust-wide collaboration built around Every Student Matters, Quality Learning and Effective Partnerships.

  • A staff benefits package including pension, employee discounts, transport support and Westfield Health / wellbeing provision.

  • The opportunity to work with determined young people and committed colleagues in a school that is proud of its community.

If you are excited by the opportunity to join a highly successful school community that is flourishing, ambitious and deeply committed to its people, we would love to hear from you.

Visits to the school are warmly encouraged. Please contact Lee Williams, Executive Headteacher, email [email protected] for further details or to arrange a visit.

Application closing date for all position is Wednesday 13 May. Interviews scheduled to take place week commencing 18 May.
