Pastoral Officer | Good Secondary School | Birmingham

Marchant Recruitment
Birmingham

A good-rated secondary school in Birmingham is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Pastoral Officer to join its pastoral team with an ASAP start . This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about supporting young people, promoting positive behaviour, and helping students overcome barriers to learning.

The school has built a strong reputation within the local community for its inclusive ethos and commitment to student wellbeing. Pastoral support plays a central role in the school’s success, and the team works closely with teaching staff, families, and external services to ensure that every student receives the support they need to thrive both academically and personally.

The Opportunity

As a Pastoral Officer, you will be responsible for supporting students across a designated year group, working closely with Heads of Year and safeguarding staff to promote positive engagement with school life. Your work will help create a calm and structured environment where students feel supported, understood, and motivated to succeed.

This role is varied and rewarding, involving daily interaction with students, responding to pastoral concerns, and supporting behaviour management strategies. You will also play an important role in encouraging attendance, addressing behavioural challenges, and helping students develop resilience and confidence.

You will be based within the pastoral team, providing both reactive and proactive support. Some days may involve working one-to-one with students who require additional support, while others may focus on coordinating meetings, monitoring behaviour patterns, or liaising with families.

Key Duties

The Pastoral Officer will contribute to the smooth running of the pastoral system and support the school’s commitment to safeguarding and wellbeing.

Responsibilities will include supporting behaviour management systems, monitoring student conduct, and responding to incidents in line with school policies. You will assist with attendance monitoring, help identify patterns of concern, and work collaboratively with families to improve engagement.

You will also provide emotional and practical support to students, helping them manage challenges that may affect their learning. This could include mentoring sessions, supporting restorative conversations, and assisting with pastoral interventions designed to improve behaviour and wellbeing.

Administrative responsibilities will form part of the role, including maintaining accurate records, updating behaviour logs, and contributing to reports when required.

The school maintains high expectations for behaviour and attendance, supported by clear policies and consistent pastoral intervention.

What We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate will have experience working with young people, particularly within a school or youth-focused setting. Strong communication skills, patience, and the ability to build positive relationships are essential.

You should be confident managing challenging situations calmly and professionally, while maintaining clear boundaries and promoting positive behaviour. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team will be important in supporting the pastoral structure effectively.

A genuine interest in supporting student wellbeing and safeguarding is essential for success in this role.
