Locum SHO (CT1) – Haematology
NHS Trust – ASAP Start | Full‑time | On‑site Job SummaryThe Locum SHO (CT1) in Haematology will support the delivery of safe, effective inpatient and outpatient haematology care within the Trust. The postholder will work under the supervision of registrars and consultants, contributing to ward rounds, clinical assessments, treatment planning, and the management of acute haematological conditions. This role is suitable for a doctor with core medical training experience seeking further exposure to haematology. Key Responsibilities
Inpatient care — Review and manage patients on the haematology ward, including daily assessments, documentation, and treatment reviews. Outpatient support — Assist in clinics under consultant supervision (e.g., anaemia, lymphoma, anticoagulation, transfusion follow‑up). Acute referrals — Participate in the assessment of acute haematology referrals from ED, AMU, and other specialties. Ward rounds — Join consultant‑led and registrar‑led rounds, ensuring timely completion of tasks and investigations. Procedures — Perform venepuncture, cannulation, blood transfusion prescribing, and bone marrow biopsy assistance (training provided). Multidisciplinary teamwork — Work closely with specialist nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory teams. On‑call duties — Participate in the medical on‑call rota (if required by the Trust). Clinical governance — Attend teaching, morbidity & mortality meetings, and contribute to audits or QI projects. Required Qualifications & Experience
GMC full registration with licence to practise Minimum CT1‑level experience in Internal Medicine, Acute Medicine, or related specialties Competence in basic medical procedures (venepuncture, cannulation, ABGs) Experience managing acutely unwell patients ALS certification (or willingness to obtain) Desirable Experience
Previous exposure to haematology, oncology, or transfusion medicine Experience interpreting FBCs, blood films, coagulation profiles, and managing cytopenias Participation in audit, QI, or research projects Skills & Competencies
Strong clinical judgement and ability to escalate appropriately Excellent communication with patients, families, and MDT Ability to prioritise workload in a busy clinical environment Commitment to maintaining high standards of patient safety and documentation Work Schedule
Full‑time, typically 40 hours per week Mix of ward work, clinics, and acute assessments On‑call commitments depending on Trust requirements ASAP start, initial contract 1–3 months with potential extension Additional Information
