Aims of Job/Job Purpose

The role of a Main Grade Lecturer (MGL) at South & City College Birmingham is to support the College’s aims, objectives and mission statement to provide quality education and training in response to local need.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Teach and assess Computing and IT courses (both theory and practical) at Levels 2 and 3. Curriculum pathways include BTEC RQF Information Technology, T Level Digital Design, Production and Development; T Level Digital Support Services (Networking and Cybersecurity); and BTEC Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Information and Creative Technologies.

  • Plan, deliver, and manage effective learning programmes, including curriculum development and review.

  • Monitor and track student progress, including target setting, progress reviews, maintaining group sizes, and arranging additional support where required.

  • Act as a course tutor, providing academic and pastoral support to meet learners’ vocational, educational, personal development, and employability needs.

  • Deliver initial advice and guidance, including initial and diagnostic assessments, referrals for additional support, and the creation of assessment materials. Provide timely feedback in line with awarding body requirements and College quality standards.

  • Maintain accurate and timely completion of registers and address poor attendance in line with College Attendance and Behaviour Policies.

  • Liaise with parents/guardians and external agencies regarding attendance, behaviour, and student achievement.

  • Ensure student progress records and Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) are updated regularly to support progress monitoring and reporting.

  • Manage the classroom environment, including attendance, punctuality, and behaviour.

  • Meet internal and external quality assurance requirements, including Internal and External Verification processes.

  • Comply with safeguarding, equality, diversity, inclusion, and British Values policies, embedding these within teaching and learning.

  • Contribute to enrichment activities, work placements, and educational visits.

  • Participate in quality assurance processes, including lesson observations and continuous improvement activities.

  • Deliver "in attendance" duties to meet student and curriculum needs.

  • Use a range of assessment methods in line with curriculum requirements.

  • Provide pastoral care alongside Student Engagement teams.

  • Support the development of study skills and exam techniques.

  • Provide cover for colleagues where required and support/mentor new staff when appropriate.

  • Undertake personal tutor responsibilities, including ILPs, progress monitoring, tutorial delivery, UCAS support, references, and coordination with parents/carers/employers.

  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade of the post and as specified within the MGL contract.

  • Participate in the College’s appraisal scheme and undertake continuous professional development (CPD), both self-directed and directed, to support the development of innovative teaching and learning strategies.
