English Teacher | Studio School | Birmingham

Marchant Recruitment
Birmingham

The Opportunity

Birmingham is a sprawling, creative metropolis with a rich literary heritage—from the historical foundations of industrial printing to a buzzing contemporary spoken-word and digital media scene. We are seeking an innovative English Teacher to join a progressive studio school . In this role, you will help students unlock the power of language, critical analysis, and rhetoric, using the city’s rich cultural and professional landscape to show how exceptional communication shapes the real world.

The School As a specialized studio school, we cater to students in Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, delivering a unique curriculum that blends traditional academic qualification with robust, project-based workplace learning. Working with smaller student cohorts, our staff build strong, professional relationships with young people. We operate much like a workplace, prioritizing mature accountability, creative problem-solving, and direct industry collaboration to prepare students for both higher education and modern careers.

The Department & Creative Culture

  • You will join a forward-thinking English team that integrates classical text analysis with practical, real-world communication skills.

  • The department designs project-based learning experiences, often collaborating with local media outlets, theatres, and digital agencies to give student writing a genuine audience.

  • The school features collaborative learning studios, presentation spaces, and digital suites tailored for media analysis and professional writing.

  • Staff work in a highly collaborative environment, co-planning thematic units that bridge the gap between English Literature, Language, and industry projects.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Contextualized Instruction: Planning and delivering high-challenge English Language and Literature lessons at GCSE, ensuring academic rigour is balanced with real-world relevance.

  2. Analytical & Critical Thinking: Training students to deconstruct complex texts—from classic prose to modern media—evaluating how bias, structure, and language influence an audience.

  3. Professional Oracy: Cultivating exceptional speaking and presentation skills, ensuring students can articulate ideas confidently in both academic debates and professional pitches.

  4. Targeted Progress Tracking: Using regular diagnostic assessments to identify learning gaps, providing clear feedback to ensure students excel in their terminal GCSE examinations.

  5. Project Mentorship: Guiding students through cross-curricular projects, helping them apply their literary and linguistic skills to workplace-simulated briefs.

The Successful Candidate We are looking for an adaptive educator who is passionate about making English vital, practical, and intellectually stimulating for all learners. Your profile should show:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) along with a degree in English Literature, English Language, Creative Writing, or a closely related field.

  • Versatile Classroom Management: The ability to manage both structured exam preparation and fluid, independent project sessions with a calm, professional presence.

  • Industry Awareness: An understanding of how literacy and communication skills translate into modern digital, creative, and professional sectors.

  • Collaborative Mindset: A desire to work closely with other departments and external partners to deliver an innovative, unified curriculum.

Why Join Our Team?

  • A distinctly different working environment with smaller class sizes and a mature, business-like atmosphere focused on student independence.

  • Specialized professional development tailored to project-based learning, alternative pedagogies, and industry-standard communication tracking.

  • The excitement of working in the heart of Birmingham—a young, diverse city undergoing massive regeneration, offering excellent transport, culture, and affordable urban living.

  • A supportive, close-knit staff team where innovative teaching ideas are actively encouraged and personal well-being is prioritised.
