SEN Teaching Assistant (Deaf Support / BSL) – Birmingham, West Midlands

Location: Highgate / Sparkbrook

Job Type: Long-Term / Full-Time

Salary: £90 – £110 per day (DOE)

Category: SEN Support / Hearing Impairment

Are you proficient in British Sign Language (BSL)?

Zen Educate is seeking a skilled and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant specialising in Deaf Support for a dedicated SEN Resource Base within a vibrant primary academy in Birmingham.

This is a rewarding opportunity to work within a specialist Deaf Learning Base, supporting hearing-impaired pupils as they navigate both specialist and mainstream classroom environments. As a Social Enterprise, Zen Educate is committed to ensuring that specialists like you receive fairer pay while helping Birmingham schools keep more of their budget for essential pupil resources.

The Role

As an SEN Teaching Assistant for deaf and hearing-impaired pupils, your mission is to ensure every child can access the curriculum fully. Your duties will include:

*

Communication Support: Using British Sign Language (BSL) to interpret lessons and facilitate communication between pupils and their peers.

*

Inclusion: Supporting deaf pupils during their transition from the Deaf Learning Base into mainstream classrooms.

*

Curriculum Access: Adapting learning materials to suit the visual and linguistic needs of hearing-impaired learners.

*

Social Development: Encouraging social interaction and building the confidence of pupils within the school community.

*

Collaboration: Working closely with the Teacher of the Deaf (ToD) to monitor and report on pupil progress.

The Zen Educate Advantage

Why choose a Social Enterprise over a traditional agency?

*

Higher Daily Rates: Earn between £100 and £125 per day, reflecting your specialist BSL skills and experience.

*

Ethical Employment: We do not charge "buy-out" fees. If the school offers you a permanent contract, we facilitate the move for free.

*

Specialist Roles: Access unique opportunities within Birmingham's specialist SEN Resource Bases.

*

Modern App: Manage your schedule, view school profiles, and track your payments with our easy-to-use technology.

Requirements

To be successful in this SEN Teaching Assistant role, you must have:

*

BSL Proficiency: Minimum BSL Level 2 (Level 3 or above is highly desirable).

*

Experience: Proven experience supporting deaf or hearing-impaired children in an educational setting.

*

Knowledge: A strong understanding of the challenges faced by deaf learners and how to overcome them.

*

Compliance: A valid Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply for one).

*

Right to Work: Eligibility to work in the UK and a commitment to working in the West Midlands.
