Art Teacher | Academy | Birmingham

Marchant Recruitment
Birmingham

The Opportunity

Birmingham is a major cultural and creative powerhouse, globally celebrated for its historic Jewellery Quarter, world-class galleries, and a booming digital media, film, and design sector. We are seeking an inspiring, technically skilled Art Teacher to join a dynamic academy . In this role, you will challenge students to master fine art techniques, spatial composition, and critical visual analysis—utilizing the city’s rich architectural heritage and contemporary design movements to demonstrate how creative mastery translates into thriving contemporary industries.

The School

Operating as an independent academy within a forward-thinking multi-academy trust, our school combines innovative educational practice with robust operational support. We benefit from centralized administrative networks, freeing our teaching faculty to focus entirely on high-quality subject delivery. We implement explicit, highly consistent, school-wide behaviour routines that keep classrooms quiet, respectful, and deeply focused. This orderly environment protects your instructional time and studio space, ensuring that students treat the art department with the maturity and focus of a professional design studio.

The Department & Creative Practice

  • You will join a highly collaborative, successful Art and Design faculty where creative expression, historical critique, and technical execution are equally celebrated.

  • The department features bright, contemporary, purpose-built studio spaces equipped with professional printmaking facilities, ceramics kilns, fine art workshops, and digital media suites.

  • A dedicated, specialist Art Technician supports the faculty, ensuring all media, machinery, and material supplies are expertly organized, safely maintained, and prepared for complex practical units.

  • Our curriculum explicitly explores a diverse artistic canon, balancing traditional observational drawing, oil and acrylic painting, and structural sculpture with contemporary digital illustration and textile design.

Core Responsibilities

  1. High-Challenge Artistic Instruction: Planning and delivering rigorous Art and Design lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE), with the potential to contribute to Key Stage 5 (A-Level) for the right candidate.

  2. Technical Mastery: Leading safe, highly organized studio sessions that train students in a wide variety of media, including printmaking, painting, drawing, and three-dimensional manipulation.

  3. Critical & Contextual Critique: Systematically developing students' ability to analyse historical and contemporary artworks, writing sophisticated critical evaluations that inform their own practical portfolios.

  4. Portfolio Development: Utilizing precise assessment frameworks to guide students in structuring coursework portfolios that meet and exceed exam board criteria for terminal moderation.

  5. Form Tutor Duties: Leading a dedicated form group, acting as the primary point of academic, pastoral, and holistic support for a cohort of students.

The Successful Candidate We are looking for an ambitious subject specialist who is deeply passionate about visual literacy and has the technical expertise to stretch and challenge creative young minds. Your profile should include:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) , QTLS , or a recognized post-16 teaching qualification, alongside a strong honours degree in Fine Art, Design, or a closely related creative discipline.

  • Track Record of Coursework Success: Proven experience or clear capacity to secure excellent progress outcomes in terminal GCSE art moderations, with a comprehensive understanding of portfolio assessment objectives.

  • Rigorous Studio Management: The ability to maintain an inspiring yet highly orderly studio environment, implementing school discipline routines with warmth, consistency, and structural clarity.

  • Collaborative Mindset: A positive, professional team player who enjoys sharing planning, organizing student exhibitions, and contributing to the wider cultural life of the academy.

Why Join Our Faculty?

  • The unique professional satisfaction of working in an academy that actively protects, funds, and champions the creative arts within its core curriculum.

  • Comprehensive, evidence-based professional development focusing on advanced creative pedagogy, dual coding, and clear internal pathways into middle leadership.

  • The exceptional lifestyle benefits of living and working in Birmingham—offering a vibrant, youthful population, highly accessible residential areas, a legendary food and canalside district, and rapid rail links across the entire UK network.

  • A supportive senior leadership team that respects teacher autonomy and implements a sustainable, evidence-based approach to teacher marking and workload.
