Head of English

Lordswood Boys' School
Birmingham

About the role

We are seeking to appoint an exceptional Head of English who can lead with clarity, credibility and ambition, securing excellent teaching and learning while driving the next stage of development across one of the most important subject areas in the school.

English sits at the heart of our improvement journey because literacy builds success. This role therefore extends beyond the leadership of a department alone. It is an opportunity to shape the quality of reading, writing, scholarship and spoken communication across the school, while ensuring that pupils experience an ambitious, carefully sequenced and highly effective English curriculum.

The successful candidate will lead a department that matters enormously to standards, confidence and life chances. They will be expected to combine strong subject leadership with thoughtful people leadership, developing colleagues, refining curriculum and assessment, and helping to ensure that pupils leave Lordswood Boys' School as articulate, confident and academically successful young people.

This is a particularly attractive opportunity for an existing middle leader or ambitious classroom practitioner ready to step into a wider role. It offers the chance to lead a high-profile subject, influence the wider life of the school and contribute to a flourishing community that is confident in its direction and ambitious for what comes next.

What we are looking for

  • A highly effective English specialist with the knowledge, drive and credibility to lead the subject across Key Stages 3 and 4.

  • Someone able to secure excellent classroom routines, ambitious curriculum thinking and consistently strong teaching within the department.

  • A colleague who understands the central importance of literacy in transforming life chances and is ready to champion this across the wider school.

  • A professional who can develop others well, building a culture of collaboration, accountability and continual refinement of practice.

  • A leader who can use data, work scrutiny, lesson visits and pupil voice intelligently to identify priorities and secure improvement.

  • Someone who can build warm, respectful relationships with pupils, families and colleagues while maintaining very high expectations.

Why join Lordswood Boys' School and Central Academies Trust?

  • A culture of high expectation, strong pastoral care and genuine teamwork.

  • Professional development, coaching and career progression within Lordswood Boys' School and Central Academies Trust.

  • The chance to shape a high-profile subject area in a school that is confident, improving and ambitious for further growth.

  • Trust-wide collaboration built around Every Student Matters, Quality Learning and Effective Partnerships.

  • A staff benefits package including pension, employee discounts, transport support and Westfield Health / wellbeing provision.

  • The opportunity to work with determined young people and committed colleagues in a school that is proud of its community.

If you are excited by the opportunity to join a highly successful school community that is flourishing, ambitious and deeply committed to its people, we would love to hear from you.

Visits to the school are warmly encouraged. Please contact Lee Williams, Executive Headteacher, email [email protected] for further details or to arrange a visit.

Application closing date for all position is Wednesday 13 May. Interviews scheduled to take place week commencing 18 May.
