Design & Technology (DT) Teacher | Academy | Birmingham

Marchant Recruitment
Birmingham

CORE PURPOSE

We require an ambitious, safety-conscious Design and Technology specialist to deliver practical and theoretical instruction within our thriving department. The role involves challenging pupils to merge engineering, materials science, and modern manufacturing concepts with precise physical and digital portfolio prototyping.

KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS

  • Curriculum Delivery & Engagement: Plan and facilitate structured, demanding DT lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, pushing pupils to achieve top-tier marks in GCSE design and vocational specifications.

  • Workshop Safety Leadership: Maintain rigorous health and safety compliance throughout all workshops, ensuring flawless machinery maintenance, complete personal protective equipment (PPE) discipline, and safe tool usage.

  • CAD/CAM Integration: Guide pupils in leveraging modern technology, including 3D printing, laser cutting, and computer-aided design software, to produce sophisticated, high-quality project portfolios.

  • Material Inventory Coordination: Manage technical workshops efficiently by organising materials, tracking equipment stock levels, and working closely with technician support to prepare resources for complex practical sessions.

  • Pastoral & Form Tutoring: Direct a dedicated form group, actively executing morning registration routines, tracking attendance profiles, and acting as the consistent point of contact for parent communications.

ENVIRONMENT & STRUCTURE

  • Academy Framework: Operating within a forward-thinking multi-academy trust, our academy benefits from centralised operational support, collaborative network planning, and robust professional development pathways designed to accelerate teacher growth.

  • Behaviour Systems: The campus implements highly consistent, school-wide behaviour routines that maintain a quiet, respectful, and orderly atmosphere, ensuring workshop spaces remain exceptionally calm, focused, and secure for technical production.

PROFILE REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised teaching credential, alongside a strong honours degree in Product Design, Engineering, or an allied technical discipline.

  • Technical Accreditation: Up-to-date health and safety certifications for secondary wood and metal workshop machinery (such as DATA accreditation) are highly desirable.

  • Pedagogical Standards: A proven capacity or clear commitment to securing outstanding progress outcomes for pupils through clear, structured instruction and rigorous portfolio guidance.

REGIONAL CONTEXT

  • Metropolitan Innovation Hub: Based in Birmingham, the school operates within a vibrant, culturally diverse city at the heart of the West Midlands, rapidly expanding as a major national centre for engineering innovation, digital design, and high-value manufacturing technology.

  • Connectivity: The area offers premier urban transit links, providing efficient commuting options via major motorway networks (M5, M6, M42) and exceptional rail services running through Birmingham New Street, Snow Hill, and Moor Street stations.
