Contract Type: Full-Time
Start Date: ASAP

Support Practical Learning Behind the Scenes
A busy secondary school in Birmingham is seeking a reliable and organised Design Technology Technician to join its support staff team on a full-time basis with an ASAP start . This role is ideal for someone who enjoys practical work and takes pride in keeping workshop environments safe, organised, and ready for daily teaching activities.
Design Technology is a well-used department within the school, and technicians play an important role in ensuring lessons run smoothly and safely.
A Typical Day in This Role
Working as a Design Technology Technician means no two days are identical. Your work will largely take place within the workshop and preparation areas, supporting teaching staff and ensuring materials are available for student use.
You may begin your day preparing equipment for scheduled lessons, checking machinery, or organising materials needed for specific projects. During lessons, teachers may request additional resources or support, and you will help maintain safe and efficient working conditions.
Between lessons, you will assist with clearing workspaces, maintaining tools, and preparing for the next group of students.
Core Responsibilities
This role combines practical preparation with safety awareness and organisation. Duties will include:
Preparing tools, materials, and equipment for practical lessons
Maintaining workshop machinery and ensuring equipment is safe to use
Supporting teachers during practical sessions when required
Monitoring stock levels and ordering materials when necessary
Keeping preparation areas clean and organised
Assisting with displays and project storage
Ensuring compliance with workshop safety procedures
Attention to detail is essential, particularly when working around equipment used by students.
The School Environment
This secondary school in Birmingham maintains a structured and purposeful learning environment. The Design Technology department is regularly used throughout the week, making technician support essential to its daily operation.
Staff across the school work collaboratively, and support staff are recognised as key contributors to the smooth running of lessons. Clear systems are in place to manage equipment, maintain safety standards, and ensure consistent preparation across subjects.
Students regularly take part in practical lessons, making organisation and efficiency particularly important within this role.
Who This Role Would Suit
This position would be well suited to someone with practical skills and an organised approach to maintaining equipment and workspaces.
The school is particularly interested in candidates who:
Have experience working with tools or workshop equipment
Demonstrate strong organisational skills
Are confident maintaining safe working environments
Can manage stock and materials effectively
Work well as part of a team
Remain calm and practical in busy environments
Previous experience in a school setting is helpful but not essential.
