The Role:
Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a student with Autism and complex needs across the school day. You will help the pupil follow routines, access learning, stay engaged in lessons, manage transitions, and build confidence, while feeding back clearly to teachers and the SENCO. The SEND Code of Practice remains the statutory guidance schools follow for identifying need, putting support in place, and reviewing the impact of support, while SEN teaching assistants are described by National Careers as supporting teachers to help children and young people with disabilities and special educational needs.

The Candidate:
You are calm, observant, and able to build trust through consistency and clear communication. You want practical school-based experience, you can stay patient in a busy secondary setting, and you are interested in how structured support helps a young person with additional needs feel secure and make progress. This role would suit a graduate who wants relevant SEN experience before progressing into educational or clinical psychology.

Requirements

• Degree – A 2:2 or above in any subject.
• Communication – Clear and confident verbal and written communication.
• Enhanced DBS – Must hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS certificate.
• Desire to work in education/with children – Genuine interest in supporting pupil progress and wellbeing.
• Career Goals – A desire to pursue a career in educational or clinical psychology.

This ‘Good’ secondary school in the Ward of Edgbaston offers the chance to build valuable SEN experience in a setting where structure, consistency, and purposeful support matter. You will work closely with teaching staff and the SENCO in a role that gives you direct exposure to day-to-day SEND provision, practical intervention, and the support strategies schools use to help pupils with Autism and complex needs access learning more successfully.
