SEN Teaching Assistant
Location: Northfield, Birmingham
Hours: 32.5 hours per week (8:30am – 3:30pm)
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Type: Temporary, with strong potential for a permanent placement
Important Requirement
Applications must include UK-based experience supporting children, young people or adults with SEN (education, care, residential or similar settings).

Make a Difference Every Day – Support Pupils with Complex Needs
We are working in partnership with a well-established specialist SEN school in the Northfield area (school name anonymised for confidentiality). This inclusive and highly supportive setting caters for pupils aged 2-19 with a wide range of additional needs, including:
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
- Moderate to severe learning difficulties (MLD/SLD)
- Complex communication and interaction needs
- Social, emotional and behavioural needs
- Sensory processing difficulties
- Physical disabilities and medical needs
- Global developmental delay
The school is recognised for its holistic, pupil-centred approach , focusing on communication, independence, life skills and emotional development . Staff work within a multidisciplinary team , using structured routines, positive behaviour strategies and personalised learning approaches to support every pupil to thrive.
This is an excellent opportunity for a compassionate and dedicated Teaching Assistant who is passionate about supporting pupils with diverse and complex needs .
Key Responsibilities
- Support pupils with a wide range of learning, communication and sensory needs
- Deliver 1:1 and small-group support , both in and outside the classroom
- Follow EHCPs and personalised learning plans
- Use visual timetables, structured routines and communication tools
- Support pupils with emotional regulation and positive behaviour strategies
- Assist with personal care and physical support where required (training provided)
- Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, therapists and other professionals
- Help maintain a safe, engaging and inclusive learning environment
- Encourage independence, communication and social interaction
What We’re Looking For
- Essential: Experience supporting individuals with SEN (school, care, residential or similar setting)
- Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification ( desirable but not essential )
- A calm, patient and nurturing approach
- Ability to adapt to complex and changing needs throughout the day
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Understanding of autism, sensory needs or communication strategies such as PECS, Makaton or visual supports ( desirable )
