EYFS Teaching Assistant (Early Years, Special Needs Focus)

About the School
This role is based at a vibrant, inclusive primary school in Edgbaston, Birmingham , supporting children aged 3–5 in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) . The school has a strong focus on inclusion, early intervention, and SEN support , particularly for children with autism, developmental delays, communication difficulties, or social-emotional challenges .
The EYFS provision is designed to give every child a strong foundation in learning, social development, and emotional regulation. The school uses a play-based, child-centered approach , with learning activities that are structured but flexible , allowing children to explore, learn, and develop confidence at their own pace. Small group work, 1:1 support, and differentiated learning are central to daily practice.
The school prides itself on embedding inclusive practices from nursery through reception , with a strong emphasis on parental engagement, safeguarding, and emotional wellbeing . The environment is carefully organised with sensory areas, interactive learning stations, and quiet zones for self-regulation.
The Role
As an EYFS Teaching Assistant , you will work closely with the Early Years Lead, class teachers, and SENCo to support all children, including those with complex learning and developmental needs. Your role will include delivering targeted interventions, supporting play-based learning, and assisting children in developing communication, literacy, numeracy, and social skills.
You will also support children in developing self-regulation strategies, emotional understanding, and positive interactions with peers. You will play a key role in observing, recording, and monitoring child development to help inform planning and interventions.
Key Responsibilities
Provide one-to-one and small group support for EYFS pupils with SEN
Support children in developing early literacy, numeracy, and communication skills
Assist in planning and delivering play-based learning activities
Implement interventions to support emotional regulation and social development
Support transitions within the classroom and to the next stage of learning
Observe and record pupil progress, sharing insights with teachers and SENCo
Promote inclusion and participation for all children
Support behaviour management using positive, restorative approaches
Maintain a safe, clean, and stimulating learning environment
Work collaboratively with staff, parents, and external professionals
Person Specification
The successful candidate will:
Have experience supporting children in EYFS, ideally including SEN pupils
Be patient, empathetic, and nurturing
Have knowledge of child development and play-based learning
Be confident in implementing interventions and structured support
Understand safeguarding requirements and child protection procedures
Be able to communicate effectively with children, colleagues, and parents
Hold an EYFS or TA qualification (desirable)
