ARP Teaching Assistant (Autism & Communication Needs)

About the School
This position is based at a large, inclusive primary school in Yardley, Birmingham , which hosts a dedicated Autism Resource Provision (ARP) supporting pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder and significant communication and sensory needs .
The ARP supports pupils across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 , offering a structured and nurturing environment designed to reduce anxiety and support emotional regulation. Pupils access a combination of ARP-based learning and carefully planned mainstream integration , depending on individual needs and readiness.
The provision is well-resourced, using visual supports, TEACCH-style structured learning, sensory integration strategies, and communication aids . Staff work closely with speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and educational psychologists.
The Role
As an ARP Teaching Assistant , you will work within the autism provision supporting pupils with varying levels of need. You will assist with structured learning activities, communication development, and emotional regulation, while also supporting pupils during integration into mainstream classes.
You will play a key role in maintaining routines, preparing visual resources, and supporting pupils through transitions, which can be particularly challenging for children with autism.
Key Responsibilities
Provide one-to-one and small group support within the ARP
Support pupils with autism and complex communication needs
Use visual timetables, symbols, and structured routines
Support sensory regulation and emotional wellbeing
Assist with differentiated learning activities
Support pupils during mainstream integration sessions
Record progress towards EHCP outcomes
Communicate effectively with teachers and therapists
Maintain a calm, structured, and predictable environment
Support positive behaviour using consistent strategies
Uphold safeguarding and health & safety procedures
Person Specification
The ideal candidate will:
Have experience supporting pupils with autism
Understand sensory processing and structured teaching
Be patient, consistent, and highly organised
Have strong communication and teamwork skills
Be committed to inclusive education
Hold a SEN or TA qualification (desirable)
