Full time starting salary is normally in the range £36,636 to £46,049 with potential progression once in post to £48,822

Background

It is an exciting time to be an engineer at the University of Birmingham. Following the creation of the School of Engineering in 2016, which brought together the disciplines of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electronic, Electrical & Systems Engineering, we are in Phase 2 of our renaissance. We are investing significantly in people and infrastructure - our new £65m signature build and our £28m UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN) Centre of Excellence for Digital Systems have recently opened their doors. In addition, our world-leading £26M National Buried Infrastructure Facility opened in 2020.

We are interested in motivated applicants to provide additional teaching support across our undergraduate engineering programmes in Engineering, particularly with experience of teaching CAD.

Duties will include developing and delivering lectures, tutorials, laboratories, group project exercises, and coursework and examination marking for our cohorts within an established teaching programme. This role will cover baseline teaching, including group project supervision, delivering lectures, assessment and supervising final year projects; as well as contributing to pastoral support for student through personal tutoring. There will also be opportunity for module leadership. The role will allow the successful candidate to work with existing academic staff to develop and support our students' outstanding learning experience and prepare them for their future careers in engineering.

Please note - this is a one-year fixed-term position and is managed/supervised by member of staff with ultimate responsibility for the design, delivery and assessment of the teaching programme.

Role Summary
  • Teaching within own subject area within an established teaching programme.
  • Development and delivery of lectures, tutorials, laboratories, group project exercises.
  • Marking of coursework and examinations under the direction of academic staff.
  • Supervision of student undergraduate projects.
  • Contributing to module leadership.
  • Contributing to personal tutoring of undergraduate students.
  • Contribute to enhancement of the student experience or employability.
Main Duties
  • Teach courses at a range of levels within specified subject area and within own area of subject specialism predominantly to undergraduates, but with potential for contributing to postgraduates and CPD students teaching; this will be predominantly through allocated lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes, so that the School's teaching objectives are met.
  • Contribute to the review and design of modules with other colleagues.
  • Contribute to the review and design of laboratories, assessment, and group projects with other colleagues to address these.
  • Plan and prepare own teaching, including guidance notes and handouts in accordance with the established objectives of the teaching programme.
  • Devise and supervise projects, student dissertations and practical work.
  • Undertake full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining. (Summative assessment, including assessed work contributing to the final award - as a mark or as a credit - such as unseen examinations, essays, dissertations or presentations, is subject to validation by the academic supervisor.)
  • Act as a personal tutor or be responsible for the pastoral care of students within a specified area.
  • Frequently update own subject expertise.
  • Undertake personal professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning processes.
  • Contribute to knowledge transfer on own specialism that is of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader.
  • Undertake management/administration arising from teaching.
  • Contribute to Departmental/School teaching-related activities and teaching-related administration.
  • Fosters a fair and equitable workplace for all staff. Identifying and responding to equality and diversity issues in line with relevant university policies and procedures.
  • Practicing inclusive teaching, embedding SDGs in students' teaching and learning, and ensuring teaching resources are accessible.
  • Act as a role model to staff and students.
Person Specification
  • Higher degree relevant to research or teaching undergraduate engineering programmes or equivalent qualifications.
  • Experience of Mechanical Design and teaching Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • Understanding of sustainable development goals and their integration into engineering design projects.
  • Experience of using digital resources to deliver teaching.
  • High level analytical capability.
  • Ability to design and deliver module materials successfully.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively.
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics and duties under the Equality Act 2010. Including fostering good relations and advancing the universities Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED).
