Traffic Engineer - Senior or Principal , Birmingham

Birmingham
Cities & Places At Jacobs, we're challenging today to reinvent tomorrow by solving the world's most critical problems for thriving cities, resilient environments, mission-critical outcomes, operational advancement, scientific discovery and cutting-edge manufacturing, turning abstract ideas into realities that transform the world for good.

Your impact

At Jacobs, we’re building the future of transport—safer streets, smarter networks and better‑connected communities.

As part of our Cities & Places business, we’re looking for a Senior / Principal Traffic Engineer to join our growing Transport Planning and Engineering team, sitting within a Midlands group (Birmingham) of more than 40 transport planners and engineers who work seamlessly across planning, design and road safety.

In this role, you’ll be right at the heart of shaping technically robust, buildable and future‑focused transport solutions. Our team sits at the interface of transport planning and highway design, which means you’ll have the opportunity to turn strategic transport objectives into real‑world, safe and compliant engineering outcomes. From early concept development to detailed design, you’ll play a leading role in delivering transport strategies, masterplans, Transport Assessments and Business Cases, ensuring safety and performance are considered at every stage.

You’ll work with a broad portfolio of clients across the UK, including Local Authorities, National Highways and Sub‑National Transport Bodies, guiding multidisciplinary teams and helping ensure that planning recommendations translate meaningfully into junction layouts, network management proposals, active travel improvements, and both temporary and permanent traffic management solutions.

Your work will support every phase of a project’s lifecycle—from early feasibility and option selection right through to Road Safety Audits and implementation on the ground.

As a Senior / Principal Traffic Engineer, you’ll provide strong technical leadership and help shape the next generation of engineers and planners.

You’ll mentor junior colleagues, set direction on project tasks and champion high‑quality, safe and innovative design. Surrounded by senior specialists and a supportive technical network, you’ll have the space to deepen your expertise, grow your influence and contribute to best practice across the business.

If you’re driven by the idea of creating safer, more efficient and more sustainable transport networks—and you’re excited to work in a collaborative environment where your ideas genuinely shape outcomes—this is a chance to make a meaningful impact while developing your career within one of the world’s most respected engineering consultancies.

If this sounds like your next step, we’d love to hear from you.

This opportunity is based out of our Birmingham office and will require 2 day office/ 3 days home hybrid work.

Here's what you'll need

A degree or equivalent in a relevant subject, which includes Engineering, Mathematics or Geography, although we’ll consider candidates from other academic backgrounds.

Proven experience in the design and delivery of highway, traffic engineering and place-making schemes, including Healthy Streets, active travel, public transport, junction improvements and public realm projects.

Strong technical capability in applying industry and local standards to transport networks, including DMRB, Manual for Streets (MfS), TSRGD, Traffic Signs Manuals and local SPDs.

Demonstrable working knowledge of Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs)

Proficient in AutoCAD, AutoTRACK, and traffic signing and road marking software, with experience producing concept and detailed design drawings.

Experience using junction modelling software (e.g. Junctions 8, TRANSYT, LINSIG or similar).
