Early Career Teacher of English - Birmingham
A large and well-established 11–18 secondary school in Birmingham is seeking a dedicated and ambitious Early Career Teacher of English to join its thriving English faculty. This is an exceptional opportunity to begin your career in a school known for strong behaviour systems, structured curriculum planning and a deep commitment to literacy across all subjects.
The school serves a diverse urban community and has built a reputation for improving outcomes through clarity, consistency and high expectations. English sits at the heart of the curriculum, with strong GCSE results and an expanding Sixth Form cohort.
The Role
As an ECT in English, you will teach across Key Stages 3 and 4, with opportunities to observe and gradually contribute to KS5 teaching as your experience grows.
You will:
• Deliver well-structured lessons using shared schemes of learning
• Teach a balanced curriculum of literature and language
• Develop students’ extended writing and analytical skills
• Support targeted intervention for GCSE cohorts
• Participate in department CPD and collaborative planning
The English curriculum is carefully sequenced to build reading fluency, vocabulary and academic writing. There is a strong focus on powerful knowledge, diverse texts and structured essay development.
ECT Induction & Professional Development
The school has a strong track record of developing Early Career Teachers into confident, skilled practitioners.
You will benefit from:
• A reduced teaching timetable in line with statutory ECT support
• A dedicated English subject mentor
• Weekly instructional coaching with clear feedback cycles
• Regular observation opportunities across departments
• Whole-school CPD focused on pedagogy and behaviour
The English department is large, collaborative and supportive. Shared planning reduces unnecessary workload while maintaining high curriculum standards.
The School Environment
Behaviour systems are clear, consistent and supported by senior leadership. Classrooms are calm and purposeful, allowing teachers to focus on subject delivery.
The school has invested in:
• A refurbished library and reading space
• Dedicated English classrooms with interactive teaching technology
• Structured literacy intervention programmes
• Strong pastoral and safeguarding teams
Staff wellbeing is taken seriously, and leadership is visible and accessible.
Who We’re Looking For
The ideal candidate will:
• Hold (or be on track to achieve) QTS in English
• Demonstrate strong subject knowledge and enthusiasm for literature
• Be reflective and open to coaching
• Have high expectations for student progress
• Be eager to contribute to reading culture and enrichment
This role would suit a motivated English ECT seeking a structured and ambitious Birmingham secondary school with strong mentoring and clear professional pathways.
What’s On Offer
• Full ECT induction programme
• Dedicated English mentoring
• Clear behaviour systems that support teaching
• A stable and improving school culture
• Strong career progression opportunities
This is an outstanding opportunity to launch your teaching career in a school that prioritises literacy, structure and professional growth.
