Food Technology Teacher | Outstanding Secondary Academy |...
The Opportunity
Birmingham is a city of world-renowned culinary heritage, from its historic "Balti Triangle" to its modern status as a Michelin-starred gastronomic capital. We are seeking a creative and highly organized Food Technology Teacher to join an Ofsted-rated 'Outstanding' secondary academy . In this role, you will lead a high-achieving department, inspiring students to explore the intersection of culinary art, nutritional science, and global food sustainability in one of the UK’s most vibrant food cultures.
The Department & Culinary Culture
You will be part of a prestigious Design & Technology faculty where Food Preparation and Nutrition is a high-uptake subject with exceptional GCSE results.
The academy features professional-grade kitchens and demonstration theatres, equipped with modern appliances to facilitate advanced culinary techniques.
As an "Outstanding" setting, we prioritize a curriculum that balances technical "chef skills" with deep theoretical knowledge of food science, microbiology, and macro-nutrition.
We maintain active partnerships with Birmingham’s diverse hospitality sector and local food entrepreneurs, providing students with masterclasses and insights into the modern food industry.
Core Responsibilities
Exemplary Instruction: Delivering high-challenge practical and theoretical lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition).
Scientific Mastery: Teaching the functional and chemical properties of ingredients—from the denaturation of proteins to the aeration of fats and the science of leavening.
Culinary Excellence: Guiding students through complex practical skills, including high-level butchery, pastry work, and the artistic presentation of final dishes.
Health & Sustainability: Leading discussions on food security, the environmental impact of global food systems, and the role of the "Eatwell Guide" in preventing modern health crises.
Safety & Compliance: Maintaining impeccable standards of food hygiene and safety (HACCP), ensuring the kitchen remains a safe and professional environment for all learners.
The Successful Candidate We are looking for a subject authority who is passionate about the transformative power of food education. Requirements include:
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Food Technology, Nutrition, or a related Home Economics discipline.
Technical Authority: Exceptional culinary skills and the ability to demonstrate advanced techniques to students of all backgrounds and abilities.
Pedagogical Rigor: A deep understanding of the GCSE assessment criteria and a proven track record of helping students achieve top-tier grades in both practical and written exams.
Inspirational Leadership: The ability to foster a classroom environment that celebrates Birmingham’s multicultural food heritage while maintaining professional kitchen discipline.
Why Join Us?
The chance to work in an "Outstanding" environment where student behaviour is exemplary and Food Technology is given the prestige of a core science.
Unrivalled professional development, including opportunities for leadership within the faculty and collaboration with lead practitioners across the West Midlands.
The opportunity to work in Birmingham—a culturally iconic city offering a world-class food scene, excellent amenities, and a central role in the UK’s creative and technical future.
A professional community that values innovation, health, and the holistic development of every young person.
