Geography Teacher - West Midlands (Independent Day...
A well-established independent day school in the West Midlands is seeking an inspiring and academically minded Teacher of Geography to join its successful Humanities faculty from January 2026 . This full-time, permanent role offers the opportunity to teach Geography in a school where intellectual curiosity, global awareness and academic ambition are actively encouraged.
Geography is a popular and well-regarded subject within the school, valued for its relevance, academic challenge and contribution to pupils’ wider understanding of the world. The successful candidate will join a department that balances rigorous academic expectations with engaging, contemporary teaching.
The Role
You will teach Geography across Key Stages 3–5 , including GCSE and A-Level. Classes are small and highly motivated, allowing for in-depth discussion, personalised feedback and extended analytical work.
At Key Stage 3, pupils follow a broad curriculum that introduces physical, human and environmental geography, with a strong emphasis on geographical thinking, map skills and enquiry-based learning.
At GCSE, students engage with contemporary global issues, case study work and exam preparation that prioritises depth of understanding and confident written responses. Outcomes are consistently strong, supported by structured teaching and high levels of academic support.
At A-Level, Geography is well subscribed. Students are encouraged to think critically, engage with wider reading and develop independent research skills. Teachers are supported to teach beyond the specification, enriching lessons with current affairs, academic debate and real-world examples.
The Geography Department
The Geography department is a stable and collaborative team of subject specialists who value shared planning, professional dialogue and high-quality teaching. Schemes of work are well designed but flexible, allowing teachers to bring their own expertise and interests into the classroom.
Fieldwork is an integral part of the curriculum. Local and national fieldwork opportunities are carefully planned and well supported, giving pupils meaningful experience of geographical investigation while remaining realistic and manageable for staff.
The department maintains strong links with other Humanities subjects, creating opportunities for cross-curricular projects and wider enrichment.
The School
This independent school has a strong academic reputation and a warm, inclusive ethos. Pupils are polite, engaged and ambitious, creating a calm and purposeful learning environment.
Pastoral care is a significant strength. Small year groups and a strong tutor system ensure pupils are well supported academically and personally. Behaviour is excellent, and relationships between staff and pupils are built on mutual respect.
Leadership is experienced and approachable, with a clear focus on staff wellbeing and professional trust. Teachers are encouraged to focus on teaching and learning rather than unnecessary administration.
Facilities and Learning Environment
The school occupies an attractive campus with a mix of traditional and modern buildings. Geography teaching spaces are well resourced and designed to support discussion, group work and independent study.
The library and study areas are heavily used by GCSE and A-Level students, supporting research projects and extended reading. Digital resources are available to enhance learning, particularly for data analysis, mapping and case study work, but are used thoughtfully rather than excessively.
Professional Development and Career Growth
Staff development is taken seriously and tailored to individual needs. Teachers are supported to:
Teach across the full secondary age range
Develop subject expertise and curriculum content
Take on enrichment or leadership responsibilities over time
Engage in subject-specific CPD and professional networks
Progression is encouraged but never rushed, with a focus on sustainable career development.
Workload and Staff Culture
Workload is carefully managed, with realistic expectations around marking and assessment. Small class sizes allow teachers to provide high-quality feedback without excessive pressure.
Staff describe the working culture as professional, collegial and supportive. Many teachers choose to remain at the school long-term due to the balance of academic challenge, autonomy and quality of life.
The Ideal Candidate
You will:
Hold QTS or an equivalent teaching qualification
Have strong subject knowledge in Geography or a related discipline
Be confident teaching GCSE and A-Level Geography
Enjoy working with academically able and motivated pupils
Value collaboration, reflection and high standards
Why This Opportunity?
Prestigious independent day school environment
Small classes and excellent student behaviour
Strong Geography uptake and outcomes
Supportive leadership and professional autonomy
January 2026 start
If you are a Geography Teacher looking to join an academically ambitious and genuinely supportive independent school, we would be delighted to receive your CV.
