Geography Teacher - Birmingham (Independent...
A highly regarded co-educational independent school in Birmingham is seeking an engaging and knowledgeable Teacher of Geography to join its successful Humanities faculty. This is an excellent opportunity to teach Geography in a setting where academic curiosity, global awareness and intellectual independence are actively encouraged.
The school has a strong reputation for academic achievement alongside a genuinely supportive pastoral culture, making it a rewarding environment for both pupils and staff.
The Role
You will teach Geography across Key Stages 3–5 , including GCSE and A-Level. The department places a strong emphasis on developing geographical thinking, enquiry skills and the ability to analyse complex global issues.
Lessons are discussion-led and enquiry-focused, encouraging pupils to think critically about topics such as climate change, urban development, global inequality and physical landscapes. At A-Level, students are supported to develop sophisticated evaluation skills and independent research habits.
The role offers the opportunity to contribute to curriculum development and enrichment as part of a forward-thinking Humanities team.
The Geography Department
Geography is a popular and well-established subject within the school, with strong uptake at both GCSE and A-Level. The department is academically ambitious but highly supportive, with a collaborative approach to planning and assessment.
Fieldwork is an important part of the curriculum and is carefully planned to be meaningful and manageable. The department makes use of both local urban environments and residential fieldwork opportunities to support exam specifications.
The School Environment
Set on an attractive campus within Birmingham, the school combines historic buildings with modern teaching facilities. Class sizes are small, behaviour is excellent, and pupils are confident, articulate and engaged.
Pastoral care is a clear strength, with teachers working closely with tutors and house staff to support pupils’ academic and personal development. The culture is calm, respectful and intellectually stimulating.
Facilities and Resources
Geography teaching is supported by:
Well-equipped classrooms with digital mapping and data tools
Access to shared online resources and research materials
A strong library provision supporting extended reading and independent study
Staff benefit from high-quality working environments and excellent on-site facilities.
The Ideal Candidate
You will:
Hold QTS or equivalent (experience in the independent sector is welcome but not essential)
Have strong subject knowledge across physical and human geography
Be confident teaching GCSE and A-Level
Enjoy working with motivated, academically curious pupils
Value collaboration and professional dialogue
Why Join This School?
Competitive independent school salary and benefits
Small class sizes and highly engaged students
